Most Russians under the age of 35 can speak a fair amount of English. You certainly should have no problems getting around if you visit a city like Moscow or St Petersberg. But if you are planning to push out into the smaller villages in your travels, then learning some Russian phrases before you go is essential. You don't have to speak the language fluently, but some basic Russian phrases will prove invaluable.

The best place to start when learning a language is an online language course such as the Rosetta stone. These vary in price from around $50 upto $400 - just Google "learn russian software" for a wide range that will suit you.
