With the fall of the USSR, Russian women have been slowly moving beyond their borders to explore the world. The side effect of treating women as equals (remember girls, I am saying this is a good thing so don't send me hate mail) that we have had to abandon the old fashioned, traditional rules of dating.

Gone are the days when gentlemen were expected to open a door for a lady or pull out her chair. A generation ago this was courtesy. Now some women will consider it demeaning or insulting. I once had a women swear at me because I opened a door for her. For men who want a return to the old days, dating a Russian woman can be a refreshing change. The Russian dating culture still embraces the old fashioned approach.

If modern society has beaten this out of you, then here are a few pointers to dating a Russian woman.

Make The Decisions - If you have had a western girlfriend you may decide together what to do on the weekend and share the the costs of any activities. If you want to date a Russian girl, then make the decisions yourself on what to do and pay the bill. While she is earning dollars, Euros or Pounds instead of Roubles now, you can bet most of her excess cash is going back to help her family. So don't expect her to pay at least until you have been dating several weeks or months.

Look The Part - Don't be lazy and put some effort in! You are not off to your local bar to watch a game. Dress nicely. Shave. Smell nice. Make a lasting impression on her each time with what she sees.

Be A Gentleman - As we men have forgotten how do this in dating, here's a quick primer. Open doors for her, pull out her chair, offer your jacket if it’s cold or raining. When walking, offer your arm – Russian women lock arms when walking instead of holding hands. It is the little details that count.

Don’t Forget the Flowers - If you want to make your mark, then say it with flowers. If she ever shows you family photos of big events (graduations, birthdays etc), she will often be standing with a huge bunch of flowers. Flowers have lost their meaning here, but they are still very significant in the Russian culture. When she was dating Russian men she would have recieved flowers often so it is a good idea to do the same. Two quick tips – avoid yellow and even numbers in a bouquet. Yellow is used to end a relationship. Even numbers are used at funerals. Try and avoid these faux pas.
